Ihumaatao maunga at risk from protectors

The number of people heading out to protect Ihumaatao is stressing the ancient landscape.
A raahui has been placed on Puketaapapa maunga near the site which Fletcher Housing has agreed to return to iwi as part of its development.
Soul member Qiane Matata Sipu, says with the number of occupiers swelling from about 200 usually to over 1000 at the weekends, the maunga is at risk.
"When you've got lots of people coming to the whenua for this kaupapa you potentially have got lots of feet walking on the maunga so we've asked when people are coming to Ihumaatao they're welcome to look at our maunga, they're welcome to walk up to the maunga, they're welcome to karakia to the maunga, but we are asking at this time if they can refrain from walking on the tihi of the maunga, just so we can keep it protected," she says.
