Māori Party wants tikanga overlord
The Māori Party wants to see a crowd-funded independent Tikanga Commissioner set up to oversee Crown engagement and help hapū and iwi to navigate issues.
Party president Che Wilson says Crown solutions often create more problems, and which Māori are then told is an internal issue.
He says Māori also question the resources committed to resolve their issues compared with there billions of dollars spent on South Canterbury Finance, leaky homes and other recent policy disasters.
He says the crown has attempted to silence Māori through cheap deals negotiated through rubbish systems, which has led to problems like the Ihumātao stand-off, Tauranga Moana’s objection to Hauraki’s treaty settlement, and the stalled Ngāpuhi negotiations.
The Tikanga Commissioner's Office would be able to critique the processes of government, like an ombudsman and facilitate tikanga processes to help restore balance between hapū and iwi.
