Protest upswell draws out human rights observers

The executive director Amnesty International in Aotearoa says the organisation is prepared to have human rights observers at Ihumātao for days or weeks if needed to monitor protests.

Meg de Ronde says the rapidly increasing scale of the protest neast Auckland International Airport means independent oversight is called for.

"You may have groups of people coming from around the country to be part of the protection so I think for us it's an important time for us to be there because when you do have large groups gathering who may have not been involved in the original protection, there might be a need for more observation," she says.

Amnesty has been reminding protesters and police to stay calm and peaceful and to be aware of their rights, including that people who may need to be restrained or removed still have human rights.
