Trade training to future proof region
Rangatahi in the Bay of Plenty could get a fast track into the trades thanks to a $1.6 million grant Tauranga-based company TradeUp's Pathways to Trades programme.
The pūtea comes from the Provincial Growth Fund via the Employment Minister's He Poutama Rangatahi programme.
Minister Willie Jackson says TradeUp will prepare and support 16 to 24 year olds for placement into apprenticeships in trades-based industries across the Western Bay of Plenty, primarily in Rotorua and Tauranga.
These could include construction, engineering and automotive trades.
Post-placement support for up to one year is also provided.
"I think it's great because there is such a need to future proof the region with a skilled labour force and this Pathways to the Trades programme gives local established tradies funding to create opportunities for our young people and it is all about investment in skills which has been sadly lacking before," Mr Jackson says.
