Reporters get hands on look at tribal paddle

Māori Television's Piripi Taylor and Kevin Harrison are off to the annual tribal canoe journey on the northwest coast of the United States.
While they are there as Toi Māori representatives rather than journalists, they intend to document and share their experiences on the Paddle to Lummi Nation with the Federated Tribes of the Grande Ronde.
Mr Taylor was taught waka traditions by late elder Tipene Mamaku and had also been involved with his Te Teko and Mataatua relations in many waka activities in Whakatāne and Waitangi.
Mr Harrison, who was mentored by the late Sir Hekenukumai Busby, has been involved in international waka activities with Toi Māori over several years, including the handover of Te Hono ki Aotearoa in Leiden, Netherlands and with the Queens Diamond Jubilee Pageant in 2012 on the River Thames.
