Indonesian soft diplomacy hides violent history

Protesters are taking a hard look at Indonesia's soft diplomacy today.
A group including Greens co-leader Marama Davidson and former Green MP Catherine Delahunty were outside Auckland's Sky City Convention centre today, where the Indonesian government was holding what it calls a Pacific Exposition.
Ms Delahunty says while Indonesia is part of South East Asia, its only connection to the Pacific is through its occupation of West Papua since 1963.
"This is a soft diplomatic move so as well as the violent bombings, killing and rip off of the resources of the people of West Papua, this is the way Indonesia tries to justify and legitimse its role as a colonial force in the Pacific," she says.
Ms Delahunty says New Zealand Governments seem terrified they will be seen as challenging Indonesia on West Papua, but that is what they need to do.
