Learn how to act as a treaty partner.
That's the advice of Māori development expert Ella Henry for Oranga Tamariki and other government agencies tasked with working with Māori.
She says the agency's response to the controversy over its record of uplifting Māori babies and tamariki shows it still doesn't understand a tiriti partnership model of working with Māori and a kaupapa Māori approach to doing its job well.
"Unless they can come up with some real and meaningful strategies for working with whānau, hapū and iwi, and I mean I'm still appalled they were advertising on Trademe a year ago to get caregivers. Why are you not talking to whānau, hapū and iwi to find caregivers and creating solutions with those whānau, hapū and iwi? That's what I want to know," Dr Henry says.
She's looking forward to this month's national hui to discuss a Māori-led review of Oranga Tamariki, as it will be a chance to wānanga and develop some deep solutions.
