Virtual tours in Māori tourism plan
The Provincial Growth Fund is spending $100,000 to investigate the feasibility of a tourist trail between Woodville and Ashhurst showcasing Māori culture and other unique features of the Te Apiti Manawatu Gorge area.
Under-Secretary for Regional Economic Development Fletcher Tabuteau says if realised, the project which incorporates virtual reality will be a great example of the use of old and new to tell the story of Māori gods and their place in Te Ao Māori.
The investment and another proposed tourism project from the Central Economic Development Agency will help revitalise towns like Woodville, which have been negatively impacted by the Manawatū Gorge's history of closures due to slips.
The Provincial Growth Fund is also putting almost $950,000 over two years into a programme to get at risk rangatahi in Wairarapa ready for work.
Ngā Pūmanawā Tūpuna is a joint venture between The Youth Education, Training, and Employment partnership the Wairarapa Rural Education Action Programme and the three Wairarapa councils, withg strong support from Ngāti Kahungunu and Rangitāne.
