$14m boost for rangatahi reo
There's more money for Māori language broadcasting – but only for rangatahi-focused content.
Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says the extra $14 million will allow Te Māngai Pāho to commission new and innovative digital media content for broadcasts and online platforms.
The aim is to support the revitalisation of te reo in line with the Maihi Karauna goal of achieving a million people speaking basic te reo by 2040, and the most important target is rangatahi.
She says 84 per cent of rangatahi want to improve their te reo, and the majority of these young people will use the internet and their social media to connect to their language and culture.
Ms Mahuta wants to see rangatahi targeted to become content producers.
