Bias fear in election roll sign up

Māori Party president Che Wilson has welcomed moves to make it easier to enrol to vote, but warns they need to ensure Māori first time voters are properly informed of their options.
Under the changes to the Electoral Act proposed by Justice Minister Andrew Little is to allow people to enrol and vote on election day.
Mr Wilson says a problem for young Māori engaging with the process for the first time is they often are not told how to sing on the Māori roll – and they have to wait until the five-yearly Māori option if they want to change.
"This is a great move and we need to celebrate this move and congratulate Minister Little but in the same breath how do we ensure the current bias that is there when they go to schools, pushing everyone onto the general role, how can we ensure it is not there in this new process for next year's election," he says.
