Māori and non-Māori food and beverage entities are set to benefit from research aimed at unlocking the health-given benefits of food.

Over the next five years the High-Value Nutrition National Science Challenge will spend $22.4M on human clinical studies of food and beverage interventions in New Zealand, Singapore and China.

The interventions were developed in the first phase of the challenge, which was about developing new methodologies and biomarkers to show the health benefits of foods in targeted areas, such as type 2 diabetes and functional gut disorders.

Challenge director Joanne Todd says the challenge aims to establish New Zealand as an international leader in understanding food-for-health relationships.
