A museum in Te Awamutu is set to go ahead with the award of a $2.6 million architectural and design contract to Wellington Firm Studio Pacific Architecture.

Waipā mayor Jim Mylchreest says because of Te Ara Wai museum and discovery centre’s strong focus on the New Zealand Wars, expertise was required in engaging with iwi and other stakeholders.

Studio Pacific’s previous work includes the He Tohu Document Room at the National Library in Wellington and the New Zealand Memorial in Canberra, Australia.

External funding will be needed for the $7 million project, and the mayor says stage one needs to proceed so potential funders such as the Provincial Growth Fund know what they will be supporting.

Work will start in July.

Waipā District Council has also set aside funding for the Te Ara Wai Journeys project to develop a mobile-friendly website to guide self-drive tours of key battle sites around the district.
