Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters says as far as he is concerned the National Party's accessing of a Treasury website before the Budget was hacking and qualifies as a criminal act.
National's leader Simon Bridges is accusing the Government of slurring him by continuing to call it a hack even after the Government Communications Security Bureau advised ministers the information came from searches on an insecure website.
The New Zealand First leader says while Treasury made a mistake in setting up the website so information would be quickly available once the Budget was read, it does not exonerate National.
"This was a website the National Party sought to access over 2000 times. That as far as I am concerned is hacking. If the National Party had not done this, there would not have been a leak. So let’s cut all the bull and get back to the fact they got found out in the end. A man in (MP Chris) Bishop’s office accessed the site 2000 times and they’re trying to act as though they’re innocent," he says.
Mr Peters says unauthorised access to a site fits the Crimes Act definition of a criminal act.
