Kapuni protest highlights fossil fuel pollution cycle
Climate Change Taranaki iwi is blockading three Kapuni sites today to highlight the links between the dairy industry and the oil and gas sector.
Spokesperson Emily Bailey says Taranaki, with its history of oil and gas extraction as well as its reliance on the milk cheque, is where the cycle is laid bare.
"They're pulling up the oil and gas and using that to feed Auckland, the cookers and things, and it's also being sent to the plant next door for Ballance to turn into synthetic urea to put on farms and this is poisoning the soil, it's poisoning the rivers and letting off nitrous oxide which is a greenhouse gas. The next factory down the line is Fonterra. They have to use fossil fuel to dehydrate all that milk and process it and ship it around the world in ships burning diesel, a complete disaster," she says.
