Just five years after being ordained a priest, Waitohiariki Quayle has become the first Māori woman to be elected a bishop of the Anglican church.
The 69-year-old, who has ties to Ngāti Kahungunu and Whakatōhea, will serve as Bishop of Ūpoko o te Ika, covering the lower half of the North Island.
She currently serves as Archdeacon of the Māori pastorate of Wairarapa, as well as working as Māori community health services manager for Masterton-based Whaiora Māori Health.
Archbishop Don Tamihere says Bishop-elect Quayle is humble, compassionate, wise and a person of great faith, and she comes with a long track record of grassroots service.
Bishop-elect Quayle says two of the most pressing issues for whānau in her region are an out of control housing situation and high rates of youth suicide.
