Wallace act opened doors

Zac Wallace is being remembered for pushing doors open for Māori actors.
Wallace, who came to international fame for his role in Geoff Murphy’s Land Wars revenge drama Utu, died on Monday.
His acting career included a range of film and television roles in the 1980s and 90s, including a small part in 1994 Hollywood feature Rapa Nui, based on the legends of Easter Island.
Waihoroi Shortland, who was on that film with him, says the former union organiser played a powerful role off screen as well.
"From the look of Zac your first impression was a hard man but he was among the softer, gentler people you would meet. A good listener, a person who took the little guy’s side," Mr Shortland says.
The tangi for Anzac Wallace is being held at Ngā Whare Waatea in Mangere.
