Ngāti Porou ki Hauraki chafe at settlement limits

The negotiator for Ngāti Porou ki Hauraki has made an impassioned plea for his iwi not to be confined to concentration camps on the Coromandel.

John Tamihere told the Waitangi Tribunal hearing into Hauraki overlapping claims that his iwi pulled out of collective Hauraki settlement talks because of the disportionate power being excercised by Ngāti Maru and the Marutūahu collective.

He says the iwi’s cultural footprint was larger than the area round its two marae at Kennedy Bay and Mataora Bay near Waihi.

When former Labour cabinet minister Rick Barker took over as crown negotiator he offered a cultural redress package including conservation estate properties outside these areas, but this was withdrawn after other iwi objected.

In an affadavit, former treaty negotiations minister Christopher Finlayson rejected Mr Tamihere’s view his iwi had been treated unfairly.

Mr Finlayson is expected to give evidence to the tribunal tomorrow, the first time a current or former minister has appeared before the tribunal to explain crown actions.
