28 Battalion legacy inspires todays scholars
The daughter of a Major in C Company says growing up around stories of the 28th (Māori) Battalion makes winning a Ngarimu Scholarship hugely significant to her.
Kahurangi Waititi from Te Whānau a Apanui, Ngāti Porou, and Ngāi Tahu is studying towards a PhD in Māori Media and Communications at Waikato University.
Her thesis explores mana motuhake through moving image and follows the creative retelling and passing down of a Te Whānau a Apanui kōrero tuku iho through time and space.
She says accepting the scholarship means she has a responsibility to her communities and whānau to do this research justice and honour to those who have gone before.
The scholarships in the name of Māori Victoria Cross winner Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu were announced at a ceremony at parliament last night.
The Masters scholarship went to Brandon Manuel from Ngāti Porou, Te Arawa and Ngāti Ranginui, who is studying at Canterbury University towards a Masters of Education.
The three undergraduate scholarship recipients are University of Otago dentistry student Te Waikapoata Tamati, Tekiteora Rolleston-Gabel who is studying towards a Bachelor of Science at Waikato University; and Tamahou Thomas who is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts at Canterbury University.
