Eye on the prize as Māori health claim winds up

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is rejecting a suggestion by Māori health claimants that 15 percent of health spending should go to Māori.

The pitch comes from Lady Tureiti Moxon, the managing director of Hamilton-based Te Kohao Health and one of the leaders of the Māori health outcomes claim which is winding up in the Waitangi Tribunal this week.

Mr Peters says while 15 percent of New Zealand’s population may have some Māori ancestry, they do not automatically want to get treated by a Māori provider.

"I don’t give a hoot who delivers the medical service to me or the people I represent, so I'm not concerned about is ethnic delivery. I'm concerned about its medical excellence and I think we've got to keep our eyes firmly on the prize here – good medicine, good health," he says.
