Increased diversity in police recruits

Almost one in five of the latest police recruits are Māori.
The 80 recruits started an intensive 16-week training course last week.
Police Minister Stuart Nash praised the diversity of Wing 326, with 43 percent being women, 19 percent Māori, 6 percent Pasifika and 8 percent Asian.
The youngest recruit is 19 and the oldest is 51.
The police workforce is now the biggest in history, with the total number of frontline officers, support staff, and others in the organisation passing the 13,000 mark.
Since mid 2017 the number of frontline officers has increased by 7 percent or 595 to 9434.
That’s at a time police data is consistently showing a drop in the number of people who are victims of crime every month.
