Auckland's Independent Māori Statutory Board wants to see more Māori involvement in fixing the city's housing problems.
The board last night considered its priorities for the last year of its current term, including boosting Māori involvement in tourism, getting more sites of cultural significance listed on planning schedules and its kainga action plan.
Chair David Taipari says housing ministers Phil Twyford and Nanaia Mahuta have supported the plan and there could be opportunities coming through the proposed new Urban Development Agency.
The board wants to see Māori, including iwi and mātāwaka, develop land freed up by treaty settlements.
"That's hands on stuff, being involved rather than just talking about it. Council, working through with them, we'll find a number of areas where they will be able to do stuff as enablers but I think the key here is central government and those who really want to get involved with developing, and that means bringing Māori capacity up," Mr Taipari says.
