Growth fund could soften growth downside

Greens co-leader Marama Davidson wants to ensure any growth driven by the Government’s provincial fund doesn’t damage sensitive environments.
The need for the right sorts of investments was driven home by a protest at Waitangi against degrading water quality in the Hokianga Harbour.
The hīkoi was led by the Green’s former Northland candidate Godfrey Rudolph, and Ms Davidson, who also has Hokianga roots, was one of the speakers when the march arrived at the Treaty Grounds.
She says pollution of harbours because of failing, outdated water and sewage infrastructure is a nationwide problem.
"And that's a classic example of what a fund like the Provincial Growth Fund could support. Some of them are small communities and don't have the same revenues other local governments do so there needs to be some way of equalising that," Ms Davidson says.
