Henare supporting Ngāti Hine schism

Tāmaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare is backing a call for a separate treaty settlement for Ngāti Hine.
Ngāti Hine spokesperson Pita Tipene put the case to Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little last week that the iwi, whose rohe runs up the centre of Northland from Pipiwai to Kawakawa, should no longer be lumped in with the Ngāpuhi negotiations.
Mr Henare says that’s a position that has been reached in a democratic way.
"It was made clear at all the hui Ngāti Hine held that Ngāti Hine wanted to do it alone and I believe we've got the expertise, I believe we've got the capacity, I believe we've got the population and the desire to do it so why are we not considered our own large natural grouping when we've got 12 or 13 marae, we've got our own hapū within Ngāti Hine," Mr Henare says.
He says Ngāti Hine was included with Ngāpuhi in the fisheries settlement, despite a desire by leaders at the time to be separate.
