The first recipient of a new Waikato District Council scholarship hopes her studies can help find ways to rejuvenate kaimoana on Aotea Harbour.

Okeroa Waaka from Te Papatapu Marae near Kāwhia is studying a Bachelor of Science at the University of Waikato, majoring in biological sciences.

The $10,000 Waikato River Scholarship came out of the commitment between the council and Waikato-Tainui and to co-manage the Waikato River by restoring and protecting environmental health and wellbeing.

The scholarship is available to Waikato Tainui tribal members who are enrolled in degree or post-graduate qualifications majoring in Planning, Resource Management, Environmental Science and/or Engineering who can demonstrate their study’s alignment to the restoration and wellbeing of the Waikato River.
