Ngāti Hine puts smaller mandate case to Little

Ngāti Hine has told Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little it wants its own settlement separate to Ngāpuhi.
Spokesperson Pita Tipene says the position was put to Mr Little by letter at the end of last year and in a follow up meeting this week at Waitangi.
He says the hapū had backed the now-abandoned Maranga Mai proposal to replace Ngāpuhi claim negotiating body Tūhoronuku with a hapū-driven structure, but it voted against last year’s Tūhono evolved mandate to share commercial redress across the whole tribe.
"As long as we got our own, what was rightfully ours as a settlement, we were prepared to work with everyone else and move together in a united and coordinated way. That is certainly not the case now. The case now is that Ngāti Hine will seek its own mandate not to be part of a bigger wider Ngāpuhi mandate," Mr Tipene says.
He says as a new minister Andrew Little took bad advice and set off down a path that was doomed, but Ngāti Hine still wants to work with him.
