Ngāpuhi hapū seek exit while talking unity
A hui to discuss the way forward for Ngāpuhi who rejected the Tūhoronuku evolved mandate drew a full house to Kohewhata Marae in Kaikohe on Saturday.
Organisers said the aim was to provide a safe space so hapū could consider whether there was an appetite for unity and cooperation.
That might be a big ask, with Whangaroa, Ngāti Hine and coastal Bay of Islands hapū indicating they considered themselves large natural groupings and were keen to pursue their own individual settlements with the crown.
The hui called for the existing mandate to be removed from Tūhoronuku.
Tūhoronuku has also held hui with supportive hapū and will try to regain its momentum.
