Ngāpuhi hapū seek way forward
Ngāpuhi hapū supporting the resumption of treaty settlement negotiations have decided to keep working together towards that goal.
About 60 people met in Kerikeri yesterday for a hui ā hapū called by a new working group, Kia Anga Mua Ngā Hapū o Ngāpuhi.
Hone Sadler, the chair of Tūhoronuku, says they are trying to resolve some of the questions around representation which dogged last year’s Tūhono process, including how urban Ngāpuhi and kuia kaumatua will be represented in the negotiation governance body.
There’s also the question of the role of the Ngāpuhi rūnanga, which 81 percent of individual voters in the Tūhono referendum said should continue to be involved.
Mr Sadler hopes agreement can be reached on making changes to the existing mandate, rather than seeking a new mandate.
He says there has been too much misinformation and manipulation on social media.
Another planning hui will be held towards the end of the month.
