Karakia in carvings for Manawatu Gorge

Tracks through Te Apiti- Manawatu Gorge have been enhanced with the opening of a new carved entrance on the eastern side and work done on tracks, bridges and weed control.
The gateway, Te Hononga Maunga, was opened yesterday by Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage after a dawn blessing by Rangitāne o Tāmaki nui-a-Rua kaumātua Manahi Paewai.
Mr Paewai says Te Hononga Maunga refers to the unique position of the gorge between two mountain ranges and was a revered place to Rangitāne.
He says the carvings by Craig Kawana reference the karakia that would be recited by Rangitāne people passing through Te Apiti.
