Tūwharetoa settlement bill passes.
Parliament has passed treaty settlement legislation for Ngāti Tūwharetoa, acknowledging the economic marginalisation suffered by the central North Island iwi.
The package includes $25 million in financial and commercial redress, another $4 million in cultural redress to support their aspirations for cultural and environmental revitalisation, and the return of 32 sites of cultural significance.
Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little says he hopes the Bill will provide the iwi with the means to support and develop their people in ways that best suits their needs.
