Papakura Marae today started its distribution of Christmas parcels on behalf of the Auckland City Mission.
The misson is also handing out food parcels and presents at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae in Māngere and Eden Park as its inner city headquarters is redeveloped.
Work and Income staff are also at the sites to assess whether whānau are eligible for top up support.
Marae manager Tony Kake credits city missioner Chris Farrely for trying the new approach.
"I know this fellow's real. I know this fellow's committed to serving our community. Since he has come on board I think the whole level of interaction and the whole impact and scale has increased. Big ups to City Mission that are good partners with us, they get it, they get the need out here and we share a good partnership with them in terms of serving our community.
The Papakura programme will run for eight days, and the marae still looking for volunteers to help.
