Ngāti Wai defends rohe to Aotea
Northland iwi Ngāti Wai has asked the crown to pause on further activity on the Hauraki settlement until its cross claims are heard.
Ngāti Wai is among a number of iwi who have been included in an urgent Waitangi Tribunal hearing into the crown’s overlapping settlements policy.
Treaty claims committee chair Aperahama Kerepeti-Edwards says the iwi is concerned the rights of its hapū have been undermined, especially those who hold ahi kaa over Aotea-Great Barrier Island.
"The only two marae on Aotea, the only people who undertake tikanga-centred practices that live on Aotea are our whanaunga that live on Aotea, Ngāti Wai ki Aotea, Ngāti Rehua. We're obligated to support them and defend our tribal rohe," he says.
