Passion fires up Whangaroa settlement journey
The new chair of a far north post settlement trust says it’s time now to repair relationships and start moving the tribe forward.
Academic Ella Henry was elected chair of Kahukuraariki Trust, after early being involved as a negotiator for Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa.
The deputy chair is businessman Norm McKenzie.
Dr Henry says while the cash component of the settlement was only $6 million, it includes three farms including the former Stony Creek Station, which has been occupied by a whānau from within her Te Aukiwa hapū.
"We believe we have the land and the resources to begin programmes that will stimulate economic business and educational development for our tribe, and that's really my passion," she says.
Dr Henry says much of the trust’s workload is repairing relationships damaged over 30 years of the claim process.
