Parihaka set to tell story for reconciliation
Te Puni Kōkiri chief executive Michelle Hippolite says she’s looking forward to working with the people of Parihaka to implement a reconciliation package signed off yesterday.
The historic Taranaki community has received $9 million and an apology for the 1881 invasion by government troops that led to destruction of the pa, imprisonment of the men, rapes and other injustices.
Ms Hippolite says some of the money is earmarked for water systems and roading, but there is also pūtea for wānanga and planning hui.
"Plans for the next three years cover a wide variety of areas starting with the story of Parihaka and ensuring there are mechanisms and vehicles within which they can tell the story and we have been helping them do that, to access work that our colleagues in Culture and Heritage have been doing and other agencies including Tourism that really want to make sure the story of Parihaka is known," she says.
