Radio Kahungunu 30 years of reo
Radio Kahungunu is celebrating 30 years in of delivering the tribe’s reo and culture to listeners from Wairoa to Porongahau.
Chair Joe Te Rito says it’s a chance to acknowledge all those who have contributed.
He says iwi radio will fight any moves to force them into a national service.
"We bring the reo out to people's homes. Where there are no longer kaumātua, we help fill that gap so it's important we maintain that ability to feed the reo that is relevant to our regions rather than a national diet of a standardised reo. Local news, local tikanga, local kawa, local history, local issues," Mr Te Rito says.
The station now has an archive of 2000 plus kaumātua interviews which helps keep Kahungunu reo strong.
