Further accolades for Sir Mason Durie at 80
Massey University has awarded an honorary doctorate in health to its former assistant Vice-Chancellor (Māori) Emeritus Professor Sir Mason Durie.
Professor Paul Spoonley, who nominated him for the tohu, says Sir Mason, who turns 80 this week, had the most comprehensive and powerful influence of his generation of Māori leaders.
His name synonymous with the field of Māori health, and his search for innovations in health and the prevention of illness led him to create a series of health research institutes within the university, including the Māori Health Research Centre Te Pūmanawa Hauora, the Sleep/Wake Research Centre and the Centre of Public Health Research in Wellington and the SHORE Centre and Whāriki Research Centre in Auckland.
He also helped establish the School of Māori Studies, Te Pūtahi-a-Toi in 1988 and made it pre-eminent in contributing to new research on Māori, including the longitudinal study of Māori families, Te Hoe Nuku Roa, which set a new benchmark in understanding Māori life chances and experiences.
