Petition for government to buy stonefields

The group fighting a housing development at Ihumātao has launched a petition calling on the government and Auckland Council to buy the land from Fletcher Building.
Save Our Unique Landscape spokesperson Brendan Corbett says now the group has exhausted its challenge through the Environment Court, there is an opportunity for government to step in and put right its past actions.
That includes the original confiscation of the land in 1863, and the council’s failure to zone the land in a way that would protect its heritage as one of the oldest areas of Māori settlement in Tāmaki Makaurau.
He says the occupiers have built an information centre on the land.
"Go and visit. We've got maybe 10 or 15 people living there in cowsheds and houses and tents but the information centre is what people need to go and see. Then the land will do its magic like it does to everyone who goes there. This is like a hidden treasure," Mr Corbett says.
