New skills for changing tribunal
Taranaki te reo Māori advocate Ruakere Hond, public policy consultant and former Waitangi Tribunal acting director Kim Ngarimu and Māori Women’s Welfare League president Prue Kapua have been appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal.
Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says they bring collective expertise across the fields of language revitalisation, governance, women’s and children’s issues, the environment, public sector, community leadership and Treaty of Waitangi expertise.
Five members were reappointed for three-year terms – Dr Angela Ballara, Dr Monty Soutar, Ronald Crosby, Tania Simpson and Professor Pou Temara.
Ms Mahuta says the blend of new energy and experience will help the tribunal make progress while keeping the waka steady.
The tribunal is shifting from historical claims to focus more on contemporary claims for breaches of the treaty that happened after 1992.
