Hapū hui in doubt
Te Rōpu Tūhono will accept the outcome of the individual Ngāpuhi vote for those who identify as Ngāti Korokoro, Ngāti Whararā and Te Pouka as the decision of the hapū on the evolved mandate proposal.”
Technical advisers for Ngāpuhi settlement body Te Rōpu Tūhono have warned hapū their votes won't be recorded unless they follow a clear process.
Willie Te Aho says Te Puni Kōkiri observers at a hapū endorsement hui held last Sunday at Matawaia Marae reported the hui did not reach agreement on how Tekau i Mua would make its decision on the evolved mandate proposal.
That means Te Rōpu Tūhono can't accept any supposed decision reported by the hui facilitators and co-ordinators.
It has called another hapū endorsement hui with an independent facilitator on December 9.
In the case of a hui held at Pakanae Marae for Ngāti Korokoro, Ngāti Whararā and Te Pouka, the independent observer was unable to confirm voting tallies or whether a consensus was reached, so the hapū have been invited to hold another hui.
Mr Te Aho says Te Rōpu Tūhono will not comment on hapū tikanga, but it relies on the independent observers to confirm a clear outcome was reached.
If hui can't reach a clear decision, Te Rōpu Tūhono will accept the outcome of the individual Ngāpuhi vote for those who identify with those hapū as being the decision of the hapū on the evolved mandate proposal.
