Whakapapa test needed for electronic vote integrity

The group overseeing voting on the Ngāpuhi evolved mandate is readvertising a hui held last week at Parawhenua.
Technical adviser Willie Te Aho says organisers tried to introduce online voting at the hui, but were unable to do it in a satisfactory way.
He says it’s understandable that hapū want to find ways to reflect the views of members who can't make their way back to Te Whare Tapu o Ngāpuhi for the hui.
Electronic votes are acceptable as long as the whakapapa of the voter is confirmed.
"When working with Electionz.com we are able to do that because we get people registered, we get people voting and on December 12 all of those special votes will go to a whakapapa committee which is up to 50 people now chosen by hapū and rohe and they will hear the whakapapa and either say yea or nay," Mr Te Aho says.
The Parawhenua hui will be rescheduled for December 8 or 9.
A dozen hapu endorsement hui will be held this weekend, with details at govt.nz/ngapuhi.
