Māori dimension to new mental health clinic
Tāmaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says a new mental health facility at Middlemore Hospital marks a new approach to treatment.
Tiaho Mai opened yesterday with 38 beds, and plans are to double it over the next year.
He says the unit and its whare Ngā Whetu Marama stand in stark contrast to the previous facility, which seemed more about containment to protect the community rather than treating patients with serious needs.
"The new facility is amazing with open areas, modern technology, also the ability for whānau to be involved in the patients' rehabilitation and treatment. The entire place has a strong focus on Māoritanga with the names, the wharenui and the people who have been involved in mental health work for so long being recognised," Mr Henare says.
