Action on Tīkapa Moana clean up plan

A plan for the Hauraki Gulf put together by iwi, fishers and other stakeholders may finally be implemented.
The Sea Change Tai Timu Tai Pari marine spatial plan was put together over four years by a Stakeholder Working Group with representatives from mana whenua, recreational and commercial fishing, farming, aquaculture, infrastructure, and environmentalists, but has sat on the shelf since 2016.
Now Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage and Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash have announced they will establish a ministerial advisory committee to oversee its implementation.
The Department of Conservation and Fisheries New Zealand will talk to tangata whenua, councils and other Hauraki Gulf stakeholders on membership.
Environmental Defence Society policy Director Raewyn Peart says it’s great to see the government now showing leadership, as the ecological health of the Hauraki Gulf has continued to decline.
