Record entries for te reo awards
A record 36 finalists have been selected from more than 150 nominations received for the Māori Language Commission’s 15th Ngā Tohu Reo Māori, the National Māori Language Awards.
Chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says as well as recognising initiatives and activities which took place during the year, the wards are also an opportunity to acknowledge long-term commitment by individuals and groups to Māori language revitalisation.
They will be presented at a gala event at Te Papa in Wellington on Friday evening.
This year’s theme was Kia kaha te reo Māori: May the Māori language be strong.
The finalists in the iwi section are Muriwai Maggie Jones, Paraone Gloyne and Te Rūnanga o Rangitāne o Wairau, while Kōrerotia Cory Ratahi, Lillian Hanly and Mike Hollings are up for the individual award.
The Broadcasting and Media section is between Te Wānanga o Aotearoa's Māori language Mahuru Māori version of the Fortnite game show, the Te Waipounamu episode of Maui Productions' Ngā Tāngata Taumata Rau series for Māori Television, and Sky TV's Tiki Towns.
Māori Language Week events up for commendation include a te reo Māori hīkoi in Whangārei, Spark & Te Aka Māori Dictionary's Kupu app, and South Waikato Pacific Islands Community Services.
