Repairs and DIY training in housing plan
Te Puni Kōkiri's Māori Housing Network is to put $5.8 million into 24 community-led housing repair projects.
Announcing the spending at today's National Māori Housing Conference 2018 in the Waikato, Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta said more than 12,000 Māori live in severe housing deprivation, and many whānau have to deal with serious health impacts as a result of inadequate housing.
She says the network was looking for projects that incorporate whānau enterprise opportunities, skills building, and social procurement.
Almost $1 million will go to Korimiti Consultancy in South Canterbury to repair 21 whānau homes and run home maintenance planning workshops.
Kia Ora Ngātiwai Trust gets $350,000 to extend its current repairs programme.
Habitat for Humanity Auckland gets $284,500 to assess and repair 15 whānau homes in Auckland and run six DIY workshops; and Te Hauora o Tūranganui-a-Kiwa $300,000 to assess and repair 15 whānau homes in urban and rural Gisborne and run eight home repairs workshops covering basic carpentry, plumbing, plastering, electrical and painting.
