Limited win in swamp kauri export challenge
The Supreme Court says it may be a good idea for the Government to review the laws around swamp kauri.
The court partially upheld an appeal by Northland Environmerntal Protection Society against the Ministry for Primary Industries, Customs and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage over the export of timber slabs labelled as tables.
It says adding legs or other mountings wasn't enough to qualify for export, and more processing was required.
However, it rejected a bid by the society to block exports on the grounds swamp kauri should be covered by the Protected Objects Act, which was designed to apply to artifacts.
