Pita Tipene explains his current position with Te Kotahitanga and Te Roopu Tuhono
At our monthly hui, Te Kotahitanga passed a resolution:
That Rudy Taylor, Pita Tipene and Jason Pou be withdrawn from Te Roopu Tuhono forthwith.
The motion was moved by our kaumatua Moka Puru and seconded by Len Bristowe and was carried.
The reason that the vast majority of people supported the motion was that most of the Hapu represented at the hui have rejected the Te Roopu Tuhono proposal being put to Ngapuhi – now that it is final and is going out for voting.
That proposal is looking to evolve the Tuhoronuku mandate that was recognised by the government in 2014.
Te Kotahitanga therefore wanted to make it clear to the people of Ngapuhi that it opposes the Tuhono proposal.
Having the likes of me sitting on Te Roopu Tuhono was just giving the people the wrong message.
For the record, I voted for the motion as I personally oppose the Tuhono proposal. I have opposed it ever since it was first put to Te Roopu Tuhono on March 3rd.
My main reason for my opposition is that it requires that the Commercial (mainly Cash) part of the Ngapuhi Settlement be negotiated by a single body representing all of Ngapuhi.
Consequently, I will be voting against the kaupapa when the voting opens this Friday 9th Nov and closes at midday on Friday 7th Dec.
Meanwhile, I will remain as a Co-Chair of Te Kotahitanga until the people say otherwise but will completely withdraw for Te Roopu Tuhono as per the resolution.
