Pressure straining Paoa relations

A spokesperson for Ngāti Paoa’s post settlement governance entity, Haydn Solomon, is complaining the crown continues to work with the mandate holder despite the wish of the iwi to move on.
Ngāti Paoa Iwi Trust has called a hui a tau for this Saturday at which it intends to convene a full board of trustees.
The Ngāti Paoa Trust Board says the trust is jumping the gun, and it’s answerable to the board until the settlement is completed.
Haydn Solomon says a hui a tau two weeks ago stripped the trust of its mandate, and it’s now time to address concerns about the behaviour of crown negotiator Rick Barker.
"The crown has agreed with the old trust board to appoint its chair as a negotiator without iwi approval and so that's a clear breach of our deed of mandate. It's agreeing with the old trust board to remove a major asset in our settlement and that's our 2000 acre farm on Waiheke Island. We're also concerned about the manner in which our negotiator has been treated. It’s been appalling," he says.
Mr Solomon says Ngāti Paoa’s remaining negotiator has been forced to make decisions under pressure from the crown and other iwi, and he has been denied access to technical advisers during the negotiations.
