New Zealand First MP Shane Jones says Ngāti Paoa needs to get its house in order.
The Auckland and Hauraki iwi is split, with a group around what was supposed to be the post settlement governance entity trying to freeze out the established Ngāti Paoa Trust Board.
It has laid a complaint against crown negotiator Rick Barker, a former Labour cabinet minister, and is trying to renegotiate the proposed settlement to get a greater share of Auckland properties than other iwi in the Marutūahu Collective.
Mr Jones says he was offended by the attacks on Mr Barker, and has told Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little he should not waste time on the settlement until he is confident about the financial cleanliness of the negotiating group.
"Hariata Gordon, a woman of great esteem and repute in the days of Koro Wetere, who fought to get back for Ngāti Paoa the Waiheke farm, would be turning in her grave with the behaviour of these ungrateful and ill-disciplined younger people," he says.
Meanwhile, the Ngāti Paoa Trust Board has asked the crown for five years of audited accounts from the Ngāti Paoa Iwi Trust.
Principal officer Dave Roebeck says a meeting called by negotiator Morehu Wilson last month which voted to remove the trust board’s mandate was unauthorised and invalid.
He says since it was set up the post settlement governance entity has tried to usurp the trust board’s mandate, and it also received millions of dollars of on account treaty settlement payments.
To date it has refused to provide audited accounts to the iwi or the trust board.
