Iwi in box seat for Queenstown development
Ngāi Tahu Property has signed a memorandum of understanding with Queenstown Lakes District Council to explore development options on a site in the Queenstown CBD.
The council's Ten Year Plan identified the Ngāi Tahu-owned site as a potential community heart.
Council chief executive Mike Theelen says a joint venture has the potential to deliver a new council office at a much-reduced ratepayer cost.
As well as the council office, the Ngāi Tahu Property vision includes performing, visual arts and cultural facilities, some commercial spaces, a library and carparking.
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu deputy chair Matapura Ellison says the iwi has a long history in the region and has made significant investments in recent decades including Ngāi Tahu Property’s development of the Post Office Precinct and Queenstown district court, Ngāi Tahu Tourism’s operations in the area including the Shotover Jet and through Ngāi Tahu Farming.
