Donation culture hurting democracy

Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says a recorded conversation between National leader Simon Bridges and MP Jami-Lee Ross highlights the needs to throw more light on political donations.
The talk about how a $100,000 donation should be handled was released by the Botany MP after he was kicked out of the party caucus.
Ms Davidson says the conversation seemed to indicate the donation came with an expectation of a party list position.
She wants the donor identified for any donation over $1000, and for a $35,000 cap on what an individual or organisation can donate to a candidate or party.
"Big money comes with vested powerful interests, often upholding the current economic system that creates big money. I want that out of politics. I want people to have equal access to our political and democratic system and we are at the moment open for corruption," Ms Davidson says.
Most donations to the Green Party are under $100.
