Services needed for kaumātua wave
The head of a new study on Māori ageing says Māori organisations need to look at the services they offer kaumātua and kuia.
The number of Māori hitting superannuation age is increasing, and latest projections are that by 2021 one in eight Māori will be over 65.
That’s why North Island whānau ora commissioning agency Te Pou Matakana commissioned the Kaumātuatanga study.
Waipareira research unit head Tanya Allport hopes it will start a conversation.
"We’re still not talking about ageing and we are definitely not talking about Māori ageing so it needs to be a conversation across whanau, across funders, across all the people involved in thinking long term and we need to design services that involve kaumātua and ask what is it that you actually want," Dr Allport says.
